An Art School project in the ‘Typography’ module. The brief was to design an Exhibition Catalogue for a fictitious exhibition about Type & Typographers of the 1950s. The design had to be influenced by the work of the featured typographers.

Project background + description

To design a catalogue based on a strict grid design system. The style of the catalogue had to be influenced by the era of design in the 1950s & the typographers featured in the exhibition. The images & copy was provided for us.

The problem

The creative problem was to include all the information in 60 pages, making sure that the design followed a grid system.

Project goals + objectives

Our initial objectives for the New Website Project were quite simple:

  • To modernise the design of the website
  • To organise the existing content to make it easily available for all users
  • To ensure that the new website aligned with our values: Transparency & Accountability, Impact & Sustainability, Empowerment & Perspective
  • To enable our supporters, grant funders, future volunteers and other NGOs/NPOs to learn more about our current projects
The design process

The design process started with a moodboard of typographies, colours, editorial layout ideas & artists of reference. This was a base to influence the design of the catalogue. The next stage was to design the grid system for the front cover, the title section pages & the main text pages. Once this was finalised I then started to compile the typographic options, testing them out on the page to see which combinations worked best with the grid system at an overall whole page level. It was also important to make sure that they kept in line with the brief of being in line with the era of design in the 1950s.
